5 Types of Restorative Dentistry

Five Types of Restorative Dentistry

If you feel nervous when you visit the dentist, you aren’t the only one. Many people are nervous that their dental procedure will hurt or that there will be some unexpected sensations. If you have been told that you require restorative dentistry in SE Calgary, feeling a little overwhelmed by the notion is normal. However, it is important to remember that restorative dental procedures are very common and are made to help you feel better, not worse. Here are some of the most common restorative dentistry procedures that we perform at Sorensen Dental, day in and day out.

Dental Fillings

This is probably the most common form of restorative dentistry near you. Dental fillings are used to protect and preserve otherwise healthy teeth that have been affected by tooth decay. Tooth decay can happen to anyone, so even if you take good care of your teeth and still require a filling, don’t panic. To fill your tooth, our dentist in SE Calgary will begin by removing the decayed portion of your tooth and then replacing the material with a composite filling material. It may feel a little strange, but it won’t hurt, and you will be back to your normal activities in no time at all.

Root Canal Therapy

If tooth decay goes unnoticed and untreated, it can develop further, until the root of the tooth becomes infected, in which case you may require a root canal. This type of restorative dentistry may take longer than a dental filling, but it also won’t be painful. Your dentist will use special tools to access and remove the infected or damaged portion of the tooth root and then fill it with a special dental material before covering it with a dental crown.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-like cap that lays over the top of a weakened or damaged tooth to restore its strength and structure. To fit a dental crown, your dentist near you will first have to prepare the tooth to fit the crown. This means reducing the size of your tooth to fit the crown and removing some protective enamel as well. It may sound strange, but getting a dental crown is not painful.

Dental Bridges

If you have missing teeth, it is always in your best interest to replace them as soon as possible because the gaps left behind can lead to other oral health issues such as shifting teeth and bone deterioration. One option for replacing missing teeth is a dental bridge. To place a dental bridge, the teeth surrounding the gap created by the missing tooth or teeth will be prepared and act as anchors for the bridge. The bridge will be cemented in place, and you will be left with a full, healthy, and natural-looking smile.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a form of restorative dentistry that offers a more permanent alternative to dental bridges and dentures. A small implant post is placed in your jaw, where your tooth root would have been, an abutment is attached to this post, and a dental crown is placed on top of that to complete the restoration. The result is a healthy, natural-looking, durable tooth that will feel, look, and function just like your regular teeth.
